Beyond the Ads: How to Judge a Locksmith

Plenty of locksmith ads claim to be the top choice in town. A slogan costs nothing. Here is what is worth checking instead.

Why slogans tell you little

Words like top rated or number one are marketing, not evidence. Verified reviews, a real business history and clear pricing tell you far more. Look at reviews on more than one platform and read the negative ones to see how the business responded.

Signs of a trustworthy locksmith

Professional from the first call

You should get a clear idea of the service call fee and starting price on the phone, and an arrival estimate. The locksmith should show ID, explain the work and confirm the price before starting.

Licensed and insured

In California, locksmith companies are licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), and you can look up a license on the state's website. Ask for the license number and whether the company carries liability insurance.

No pressure to upgrade

A good locksmith tells you when a repair or rekey is enough and does not push new locks you do not need.

Respect for your property

Non-destructive entry should be the first option for a standard lock. If drilling is needed, you should hear why before it happens.

Red flags

  • A generic name and no address or license number
  • A phone price far below everyone else's that grows on site
  • Refusing to give any estimate before arriving
  • Drilling a standard lock straight away
  • Pressure to buy expensive hardware
